Raquel Di Carvalho

From southern Brazil to the Mediterranean.
Raquel Luciane Carvalho Pies (b. 1975), simply Di Carvalho, was born in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, to a Brazilian family of Portuguese and German descent, the eldest daughter of Inês and Evaldo. Her childhood was spent between her hometown and family visits to Santa Catarina, where she would live again after her training. At 19 she began her journey as a painter in São Paulo, taking courses and workshops with local painters, completing her Fine Arts degree at Feevale University in 2002.
In the late nineties and early 2000s, still in Novo Hamburgo, she began teaching and taking her first commissions in her studio. In 2006 she travelled to Spain in search of new knowledge and experience: after two years in Bilbao, she moved to the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela, where she again offered her services as painter and teacher.
After much work, recognition began to press for higher flights than the small town of O Milladoiro. In 2016, Di Carvalho sold her business in Santiago de Compostela and moved to Barcelona, where she works and lives to this day. Today, her works bear witness to her technical mastery and the profound humanity that permeates her work.
Her painting — a symbolic hyperrealism drawn from travel, lived experience and the children around her — has earned awards and exhibitions in Brazil, Spain, Italy, Ireland and the United States.
